Nike Made a Major Change to This Classic Sneaker — and It’s Already Getting Mixed Reactions

Here's a full look at the upcoming Nike Air Bakin SP "Multicolor," which is set to arrive at retail during spring 2027.

One of the most surprising successes of Nike Sportswear’s 2026 output has been the return of the Air Bakin retro basketball sneaker.

The 1990s model’s original Varsity Red colorway was reissued in September and quickly sold out from nearly every retailer, much to the surprise of some fans who had witnessed the Air Bakin’s previous rereleases fall under steep discounts. With more colorways set to be released this year and a low-top collaboration with Jae Tips on the horizon, yet another new look for the retro model has surfaced.

The Nike Air Bakin SP will soon be released in a brand-new Multicolor makeup with a full colorway of Black/Chlorophyll/Multicolor. The upcoming style is unlike any Air Bakin that has come before, adding a tweed-like multicolor overlay to the upper in an array of rainbow shades.

The appearance is reminiscent of Nike’s various multicolor Flyknit releases; however, the Air Bakin doesn’t appear to use knit, but instead a bouclé-like texture atop the sneaker’s typical mesh base. The colorful accents are balanced out with a black base and touches of chlorophyll green on the heel Air unit, outsole, midsole jewel Swoosh and at the toe basketball logo. Blue Nike Air embroidery is also found at the heel.

Early social media reactions to the new Air Bakin colorway are split, with some fans praising the new direction and others suggesting it spells a downturn in the model’s momentum.
