As artistic curator for Project Healthy Minds World Mental Health Day Gala, taking place Thursday at Spring Studios in New York City, Naeem Khan is excited to advance mental well-being.
Best known for dressing well-known women such as Beyoncé Knowles-Carter; former First Lady Michelle Obama; Catherine, Princess of Wales; Paris Hilton; Sabrina Carpenter; Jennifer Lopez, and Queen Latifah, among others, Khan is lending his talents to one of the year’s leading mental health events, aiming to reimagine how design, storytelling and human connection can inspire hope and drive change.
Asked how he got involved in Project Healthy Minds, Khan said, “I’ve known Phil [Schermer, Project Healthy Minds’ chief executive officer and founder] for a while. Philip is amazing and he inspires me. This whole idea of mental health, especially in the fashion industry….I’ve lived my life with Studio 54, Andy Warhol, all that stuff, I’ve seen so much of it,” he said. He said it’s important for the fashion industry to bring it to the forefront, “and see how we can help.”
Khan said he and his company have been involved with this organization before on a social level. “Now I’m ready to take the big plunge,” he said.
For the gala, Khan has chosen the theme “Beneath the Glitter” to explore the duality between outward radiance and inner reality. The theme serves as a metaphor for the human experience: complex, multifaceted and resilient, even in moments of brokenness, and reflects Project Healthy Minds’ commitment to creating a world where mental health is met with openness, compassion and care.
