Material World is a weekly roundup of innovations and ideas that are reshaping the materials sector. It covers the latest developments in how fashion is designed, engineered, and scaled—from emerging biomaterials and next-generation leathers to engineered fibers and sustainable alternatives.
Polartec is updating its Alpha active insulation platform with a patent-pending construction designed to address snagging and shedding as brands increasingly use the material as a visible or standalone layer.
Originally developed for highly active military users, Alpha uses an open structure that balances insulation with airflow as activity levels change. The material later moved into outdoor and endurance apparel, where its lightweight warmth, breathability, quick-drying properties and packability made it an alternative to more static forms of insulation.
The next-generation construction is intended to improve the fabric’s structural integrity without closing the open architecture responsible for its airflow and thermoregulation, according to the Milliken & Co.-owned textile manufacturer.
Polartec said the redesign followed more than four years of collaboration, prototyping and testing with performance brands. The company is also expanding the range of available constructions, weights and textures, giving designers more control over hand feel, appearance and performance.
“Our challenge was to make Alpha more durable and versatile without sacrificing the structure responsible for its performance,” said Karen Beattie , director of product management at Polartec.
