Fashion Briefing: Live from New York – Why ‘SNL’ stars are becoming mainstays in fashion marketing

This week, a look at the rise of “Saturday Night Live” cast members showing up in fashion campaigns, lookbooks and collaborations.

J.Crew’s latest brand campaign features an unlikely trio of brand ambassadors: Ben Marshall, Martin Herlihy and John Higgins, who make up the comedy group Please Don’t Destroy.

While originally known for their viral videos, the trio are now better known for their work on “Saturday Night Live.” All three appear in digital shorts, while Herlihy and Higgins are writers for the show and Marshall is a cast member. Their work for J.Crew includes a humorous short film showcasing J.Crew’s men’s suits. It was written by the group and collaborator Brady Lees, and was directed by Herlihy.

But J.Crew isn’t the only place “SNL” stars are showing up. While “SNL” cast members have always enjoyed fame outside of Saturday night, the current lineup is notably stacked with stars who make frequent appearances in the fashion world. Cast members like Chloe Fineman, Sarah Sherman, and Ashley Padilla, along with recently departed cast members like Bowen Yang, have all been featured in brand campaigns, appeared in brand lookbooks, and even collaborated with brands directly on special products and collaborations.

It’s reflective of how fashion brands are increasingly looking for novel ways to tap into popular culture. While fields like sports and music are well-represented within fashion, comedy is a growing cultural powerhouse that brands are just starting to tap into.
