Amazon adds over 100 Alexa for Shopping functions

New capabilities include managing subscriptions, resolving billing questions, and creating and editing lists and registries.

Over 400 million customers have used Alexa for Shopping over the past 12 months, according to Amazon.

“Our vision for Alexa for Shopping is to make every part of shopping as convenient as possible,” Rajiv Mehta, vice president of conversational shopping, said in a company blog post. “This is just the beginning. We're continuing to invent new ways to save customers time and make shopping even more personal.”

The company rolled out the shopping assistant in May, replacing its Rufus shopping assistant.

As Amazon watches adoption of its AI shopping assistant accelerate, the e-commerce behemoth has butt heads with another tech giant. In September, Amazon asked Meta to scrub its e-commerce site from the Muse AI agent experience. Amazon said it had not received advance notice that Meta would integrate Amazon into its AI agent, nor did Amazon grant Meta permission to do so.

Amazon took Perplexity to court last year because its Comet AI agent had made Amazon purchases on consumers’ behalf.

Amazon’s Alexa for Shopping feature was a bright spot in the company’s third-quarter earnings report. The retailer’s online store net sales saw a 2% bump from the previous year to $68.5 billion, and its physical store sales also rose at the same rate to $5.7 billion.

S. customers using Alexa for Shopping are spending 50% more per order than those who don’t,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said to analysts during a Q3 earnings call.
