ZeroMe has launched OffsetC, a consumer app designed to make carbon offsetting easier to understand by connecting everyday gasoline purchases with climate projects.
The New York-based company said the app can identify fuel purchases made with registered Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Discover cards at U.S. gas stations. OffsetC estimates the amount of fuel purchased and tells users the cost of addressing the associated emissions.
The current price is $0.23 a gallon. The app is initially available for iPhone users in the U.S.
OffsetC enters a carbon market where concerns over the quality and credibility of some offsets have complicated efforts to engage consumers. ZeroMe said it created a Carbon Quality Framework and will purchase only offsets that meet its standards.
The platform provides information on how carbon credits are created, the projects behind them and factors including standards, verification and other measures of quality. Its portfolio combines multiple projects, including lower-cost credits and higher-cost carbon removal approaches.
ZeroMe said the service is intended to complement, rather than replace, efforts to reduce emissions. Users can estimate emissions, learn about offsetting, examine the projects they fund and track their climate action over time.

“Offsetting should complement real emissions reductions, not replace them,” said ZeroMe co-founder and chief executive Chris Sandlund.
The company ultimately wants to deliver notifications closer to the time of a purchase, potentially prompting users to consider offsetting soon after filling their vehicle.
