The UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSTI) has invested ~$1 million (£783,749.20) in carbon removal credits to be delivered by Climeworks AG.
This procurement is part of the construction of a new headquarters for the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), which will be developed at the University of Reading’s Whiteknights campus.
Established as an intergovernmental research institute, the ECMWF is currently headquartered in Shinfield (UK) and has sites in Bonn, Germany, and Bologna, Italy.
Its teams contribute to major European initiatives, including the Copernicus program – the Earth’s observation component of the EU’s Space Program, and Horizon Europe – the EU’s flagship research and innovation program.
The headquarters planned for construction in Whiteknights will need to meet the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. To that end, the DSTI launched a carbon offsetting procurement tender with a budget up to ~$3.3 million, and the contract with Climeworks is the first announced agreement under this call.
Through this call, the DSTI is looking to offset approximately 5165 tonnes of carbon (or equivalent greenhouse gases) as a one-off procurement via a broker to balance out embodied emissions as a result of the new headquarters construction.
In September 2026, Climeworks was selected as the supplier to provide the needed credits under a contract scheduled to run for 1 year and 5 months.
The company was selected from a pool of 27 applicants, with all remaining 26 submissions deemed unsuccessful.
