Spanish companies Ignis and Rebi have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the development of district heating networks using waste heat from data centers. The aim is to recover thermal energy generated during data center operations and use it to supply heat to residential buildings, commercial facilities and industrial processes.
The collaboration will focus on data center projects that Ignis is developing in partnership with specialized operators. The two companies will assess solutions to integrate data center cooling systems with waste heat recovery and distribution technologies.
The feasibility of each project will depend on nearby heat demand and the technical conditions required to connect the data center to a district heating network. Such integration could replace some conventional heat generation, reducing fuel consumption for heating and industrial processes.
Rebi will contribute its expertise in designing, building and operating district heating networks, while Ignis will assess how these solutions could be integrated into its data center project portfolio and energy management operations.
Rebi currently operates six district heating networks in Spain and develops heating solutions for the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Its technology portfolio includes biomass, waste heat recovery, heat pumps, hybrid solar systems and thermal energy storage.
Ignis develops and manages energy projects for large-scale consumers and emerging electricity demand, including data centers. The company has more than 1 GW of generation capacity in operation or under construction and manages approximately 10 GW of assets, including its own and third-party facilities.
