Groundwork BioAg has secured a ‘BBB’ carbon rating from BeZero for its Rootella Carbon® program centered around mycorrhizal inoculants.
This achievement signals a level of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) quality suitable for buyers who approach CO2 removal purchases with the strictest due diligence requirements.
“For years, the question about soil carbon wasn’t whether it worked. It was whether anyone could prove it. Our growers’ carbon has been measured in the field, independently verified, and now rated by BeZero at the level buyers actually commit to. BBB is where buyers sign,” said Shawn Gagné, Chief Carbon Commercial Officer at Groundwork BioAg.
This validation comes months after the globally positioned company issued the first verified credits from the Rootella Carbon® program, independently verified by SCS Global under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard.
In June 2026, the program issued 19,568 tCO2e, and, according to Groundwork BioAg, the next verification cycle in Q1 2027 will yield an estimated issuance of 245,000 tCO2e, advancing rapidly towards the forecasted 500,000 tCO2e by Q4 2027.
The mycorrhizal CDR approach is said to sequester 1.5–3.5 tCO₂e/ac (4–9 tCO2e/ha) annually. The Rootella Carbon® program supports farmers in implementing mycorrhizae fungi on suitable land, helping them build up soil carbon and access the voluntary carbon market through credit sales.
The program addresses the three key factors considered in BeZero’s evaluation: carbon accounting (measure & remeasure, not model), additionality, and permanence (durability).
Relying on direct measuring and remeasuring, the program conducted comprehensive control plot planning, featuring 593 sampling points in the 2023 cohort, physically sampled to 30 cm.
