German solar developer Südwerk has integrated three dedicated roe deer passages into the perimeter fencing of a 20 MW solar park under construction in Memmelsdorf, Bavaria. The openings are designed to maintain existing wildlife corridors through the project site.
Südwerk said the idea originated with local hunters, who identified routes regularly used by roe deer in the area. German mounting system and solar infrastructure provider ZPV subsequently developed the fence design.
The passages are made primarily from standard components already used in solar park fencing and can be incorporated into the perimeter fence without custom fabrication.
The project’s ecological measures also include hedgerows, wildflower strips and extensively managed grassland, covering a combined area of around 15,600 square meters.
Südwerk said it plans to use the experience gained at Memmelsdorf in future projects and assess the feasibility of similar wildlife passages during the early planning stages.
The Memmelsdorf community solar park is nearing completion and is expected to begin commercial operations by spring 2027 at the latest. The ground-mounted array will have an installed capacity of 20 MW and occupy approximately 16.9 hectares.
A second construction phase is scheduled for autumn 2027 and is set to include a battery energy storage system. Südwerk has not disclosed the planned power or storage capacity of the battery system.
