Agribusiness biochar platform Terraton has issued its first certified carbon removal credits and secured purchase agreements for up to 97,240 metric tons of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) across a buyer syndicate including Climeworks Solutions, Climate Impact Partners, Carbonfuture, Terraset, and The Coca-Cola Company.
The initial credits were issued by carbon registry Isometric for carbon removal generated at the EcoFix Kenya facility in Nanyuki, Kenya. The facility converts waste nut shells from agricultural processing into biochar without altering primary operations.
Terraton managed site design, project financing, and hardware installation, utilizing smart facility sensors and Offstream’s digital Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (dMRV) platform to transmit operational data directly to Isometric.
Following a 14-month development cycle from investment decision to credit issuance at EcoFix, Terraton is leveraging standardized facility designs, operating procedures, and automated data collection to compress future project timelines to ten months.
Terraton is currently commissioning its second facility in Sagana, Kenya, in partnership with Tupande, the Kenyan brand of One Acre Fund.
The company holds 28 executed MOUs and has over 30 additional sites under evaluation across Africa, South America, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, with each facility built to the same standardized engineering template as EcoFix.
The commercial agreements cover significant volumes across the firm’s global portfolio. Climeworks Solutions committed to 2,000 tons from EcoFix alongside 14,000 tons reserved from future sites, while Climate Impact Partners secured 3,000 committed tons with 31,500 tons reserved.
Nonprofit climate fund Terraset expanded its relationship with a seven-year offtake for up to 14,000 tons, Carbonfuture will bring 32,500 tons to market through 2031, and The Coca-Cola Company purchased 240 tons via carbon platform CUR8.
