Carbon180 Presents New Roadmap For Scaling Removals On Agricultural Land In The U.S.

Climate NGO Carbon180 has released a new roadmap that suggests paths for the U.S. federal government to scale carbon dioxide removal (CDR) on agricultural land in the country.

The publication offers policy recommendations on different domains, including infrastructure and market access, land access and tenure, technical assistance and local capacity building, incentives and risk management, and monitoring, research, and development.

With a design centered around producers, the roadmap builds on the feedback provided by land stewards, scientists, and technical assistance providers, who took part in Carbon180’s Living Ground report released in September 2026.

In this, different stakeholders comment on a multi-actor vision on restoring carbon dioxide on agricultural lands in the United States.

The newly released roadmap outlines concrete suggestions that could unlock wider carbon removal adoption across the U.S. agricultural sector.

In the publication, the authors outline a conservation pilot procurement program for crops grown with carbon dioxide sequestering practices.

Additionally, the authors propose a sustainable producer workforce development program that would pair new or aspiring farmers interested in gaining experience with mentor farmers who have already implemented regenerative practices.

Another highlight in the publication is the idea of nationwide free soil health testing across the United States and interpretation for all the interested farmers and ranchers.

According to the authors, a helpful step towards unlocking more agricultural CDR would be to use longer federal conservation program contracts that reward producers for practice longevity to match up with soil carbon accrual timelines.

The roadmap, titled “Restoring Carbon for Healthy Agricultural Lands,” also includes Carbon180’s signature soil carbon MMRV legislation, which standardizes soil CO2 measurement and creates a soil inventory and analysis network.
