Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has directed officials to prepare a plan involving blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies to help the country circumvent potential international economic sanctions, including restrictions on its banking system.
Speaking in an interview with Israel’s Channel 10 on Friday, Netanyahu acknowledged growing concerns about foreign economic pressure and said Israel must develop alternative financial mechanisms to reduce its vulnerability.
“We need to understand that there could be banking sanctions. You need to prepare an alternative economic system, and you know what that is, and you know which currencies can bypass this, and I’m working on that as well,” Netanyahu said, according to The Jerusalem Post.
When asked specifically whether blockchain technology could provide an alternative to conventional financial channels, Netanyahu confirmed that it was among the options being considered.
“One of them. Certainly. And I’ve already asked for a plan to be prepared for that,” he said.
The prime minister did not specify which cryptocurrencies or blockchain networks might be involved, which government agencies would oversee the initiative, or when such a system could be implemented.
The proposal raises the prospect of Israel turning to decentralized financial infrastructure to maintain international transactions if traditional banking channels become restricted.
Cryptocurrencies can facilitate cross-border transfers without relying directly on conventional banking networks, although their effectiveness in circumventing sanctions remains limited by exchange controls, liquidity requirements, blockchain surveillance, and restrictions on financial intermediaries.
Netanyahu’s remarks come amid mounting international criticism of Israeli government policies in Palestine and efforts by several countries to impose economic restrictions related to the country’s military operations and settlement activities.
