BOJ will more than double stock-fund sales from January

Annual ETF sales will rise from about ¥330 billion to ¥860 billion at book value from January 2027, while the BOJ can adjust or suspend sales.

The Bank of Japan will more than double its annual ETF sales following an Oct. 30 decision, increasing the stock-fund supply private investors will absorb from January 2027. Planned disposals rise from about ¥330 billion to ¥860 billion a year at book value.

Bitcoin‘s exposure is indirect: stress in equities could spread through leveraged portfolios.

The funds hold Japanese equities, rather than Bitcoin. The BOJ puts the new annual pace at about ¥2,460 billion at indicative market value. That conversion uses the market-to-book ratio of ETFs it sold during January through September 2026. Sales will be spread over the year, with the accelerated pace starting in January 2027.

The new pace targets about 0.1% of trading, calibrated using January-September 2026 Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market data. The earlier setting targeted about 0.05% of market trading at the time of the September 2025 decision. The two trading shares use different reference periods.

The BOJ's disposal framework allows it to temporarily adjust or suspend sales as financial-market conditions change. The bank says disposals since January 2026 have proceeded smoothly while avoiding a major market impact, alongside expanding stock-market trading.
