a16z renames crypto fund Frontier, expands mandate beyond crypto

Andreessen Horowitz says a16z Crypto is becoming a16z Frontier, widening its scope to frontier startups while continuing crypto investing.

Andreessen Horowitz said it is expanding the scope of its a16z Crypto fund beyond digital-asset startups and renaming it a16z Frontier, a move that broadens the firm’s stated remit to what it calls frontier startups building new technologies and markets that may take years to develop. In the firm’s Oct. 22, 2026 post, managing partner Chris Dixon said the change is an expansion rather than a retreat: a16z will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures while also backing companies that do not fit neatly into existing categories.

In the announcement, Dixon said the firm’s thinking has shifted as blockchain infrastructure has become more embedded in mainstream financial products. He argued that the distinction between “crypto companies” and other businesses using blockchains has become less useful as Wall Street and fintech firms increasingly launch products built on blockchains. The post frames the rebrand as a way to define companies by what they do, rather than by the technologies they use.

Dixon also tied the new mandate to a broader investment thesis the firm says has guided it for years: backing technologies before they reach the mainstream. He pointed to earlier a16z investments in new computing devices, including Oculus, Skydio and Zipline, and to crypto investments including Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap. The post said the firm now sees a new wave centered on AI, with software and hardware becoming easier to create and new products, devices and network models beginning to emerge.
