As a ChatGPT power user, I am constantly going back and referencing past conversations and Projects.
Whether it's a meal plan my family actually liked or a resume I spent an evening working on, there are many chats that are just too important to lose.
Over time, those exchanges become a history of work you've done, which means, the only copy shouldn't be inside your account. Leaving it there makes it harder to keep that work somewhere you control.
You don’t need to be planning an exit from ChatGPT to save your history. The same logic applies to backing up photos or keeping a copy of an important document: if you’d be annoyed to lose it, it’s worth saving.
The good news is, ChatGPT has a built-in export option. Here’s how to use it, what to do with the download and where its usefulness ends.
OpenAI says exports can take up to seven days. When yours is ready, you’ll receive an email or SMS with a download link that expires after 24 hours. Download it quickly and while signed in to the account that requested it.
The ZIP includes chat history and other account data. Extract it and check that the conversations you need are there.
Settings-based export is available for personal Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts . Business and Enterprise workspaces don’t offer this self-service option. If you can’t sign in, try OpenAI’s Privacy Portal . Select Make a Privacy Request, I have a consumer ChatGPT account, then Download my data and follow the instructions.
