We Answer 16 Questions About Folding the iPhone Duo Hundreds of Thousands of Times

We're folding Apple's expensive phone in our lab until it breaks, and livestreaming the process. You have lots of questions.

So far, we have folded the iPhone Duo more than 200,000 times using our proprietary testing machine, the Fold-a-Phone. Along the way we’ve been sharing the process here on CNET and on our livestreams every weekday. Our audience on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok is incredible, so first off, thanks for watching.

Viewers have also asked many, many questions about everything we’re doing, and I’ve done my best to answer them in real time during those streams. I’ve noticed that a lot of the same subjects keep coming up, so I assembled this handy FAQ to address the most, er, frequently asked. Here goes.

At CNET, we are independent technology journalists, and as part of that independence, we design numerous custom tests in our lab facilities. When it became clear earlier this year that Apple would finally release a folding iPhone, we figured the foldable category would likely enter the mainstream. Durability would be a major concern, and we wanted to test it.

So we set off on a months-long crusade to build not just any foldable phone testing machine, but one that would give us the best data about durability. Each phone is tested in highly controlled conditions, with a tightly calibrated opening and closing cadence to ensure equivalent performance each and every time. Computer programs analyze sensor data to help us learn not just when a phone fails, but why it fails.
