This New Device ‘Bricks’ Your Phone When You Enter Your Bedroom

If you struggle with doomscrolling when you should be sleeping, this new Brick could help.

Brick, the maker of my favorite device for curbing doomscrolling, launched its first new product since the Brick on Thursday. Called Brick Night, it was designed to automatically block apps the moment you enter your bedroom to promote better sleep.

While 87% of US adults sleep with their phones in their bedrooms, studies have found that screen time in bed is associated with poorer sleep quality. Brick Night has the potential to prevent this.

First, in the Brick app, you create custom modes by selecting the apps you want to block and the time window you’d like them to stay blocked. Then, you define your bedroom space, up to 25 by 25 feet. Place your Brick Night in this space, like on your nightstand, and once Bluetooth detects that you’ve entered your bedroom, Brick Night will handle the rest.

Specifically, Brick Night uses your Bluetooth signal strength to estimate how close your phone is to the Brick Night through the Brick app. When you enter your bedroom, Brick Night automatically activates during your preselected time window; when you leave, it unblocks your apps based on your settings.

Brick Night is battery-powered, so it doesn’t need to be charged and comes with batteries included. These last at least two years.

One Brick Night can also be shared by multiple users with their own Brick apps in the same bedroom. It is compatible with both iOS and Android.
