‘The People v. Gorilla Grodd’ Adds Sara Gilbert to Cast

The People v. Gorilla Grodd, DC Studios’ Jimmy Olsen-centric Superman spinoff series, has added a familiar face to its cast. Deadline reports Sara Gilbert (Roseanne) will play an “important journalist” in the upcoming HBO show. It’s unclear if Gilbert is playing an existing character in the DC Universe or if her character will be an original creation for the show.

Either way, Gilbert’s role as a journalist makes sense, given that The People v. Gorilla Grodd is styled as a true-crime mockumentary directed by Daily Planet reporter Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo). “A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City,” the official logline reads. “In an eight-part ‘true’ crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”

The series, which comes from American Vandal creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda, also stars Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. Additionally, Mary Holland, Eduardo Franco, Dan Perrault, Andrew Leeds, Tim Baltz, and Arian Moayed will appear in as-yet-undisclosed roles.

The People v. Gorilla Grodd is the latest genre experiment from DC, which is also getting weird with the upcoming big-screen body-horror Batman villain origin story Clayface. Regardless of how these projects turn out, it’s nice to see a comic book movie studio taking some swings.
