The Future of ‘Doctor Who’ Is Still Uncertain, But Here’s a Great Way to Celebrate Its Past

While the Doctor Who faithful wait to see who will win the bake-off to become the BBC’s next production partner on the series, its illustrious past is still getting its due on Doctor Who Day—the annual celebration of the first episode’s original airdate. Even better, it’s a special theatrical event starring David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor, one of the most popular iterations of the Time Lord in the show’s lengthy history.

The first Doctor Who episode aired November 23, 1963, and November 23, 2026, is the date you’ll need to save for Doctor Who: The Satan Pit Extended Cut, starring Tennant as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose Tyler. It’s the first time the episode has hit the big screen, and it’s arriving in supersized form, blending “The Satan Pit” with the episode that preceded it, “The Impossible Planet,” to create “a newly re-edited, movie-length cinematic cut, featuring deleted scenes that were previously only available on DVD, now restored into the story and never-before-seen extended footage,” according to a press release.

In addition, the screening will feature “an exclusive interview with International Emmy and multiple BAFTA award-winning director and producer James Strong, reflecting on the making of one of the most celebrated stories of the modern Doctor Who era.”
