Depending on what region you live in, the risk of floods may be a real problem for you, especially in the colder months. Heavy rain can feel like its come out of nowhere, so it's best to be prepared.
While you can track rain patterns on weather apps and from regional news, it's a much better idea to get ahead of the weather entirely.
Instead, you should be doing any prep work before you're faced with flood warnings and predictions of heavy rain.
Fortunately, I've put together a 5-minute fall flood checklist that will help you prepare your home for a flood, hopefully preventing damage that'll take a lot longer to resolve.
After all, it's better to be ready even if the rain doesn't arrive than be caught out with a flood striking and creating hazards across your home.
Fall is the perfect season for your gutters and downspouts to get clogged up. Why? Well, with falling leaves and extra rain, it can concoct the ultimate mulch that will easily block the area. It's also a great breeding ground for moss to gather, too.
Grab a sturdy ladder with someone spotting you or a stabilizer at the bottom, then using a bucket and gloves, remove all the packed debris, leaves and moss that's blocking up your gutters. You should do this once or twice during the fall, especially around November and December as that's when most trees lose their leaves.
Around your home, you may have nearby trees and shrubs that are your responsibility to trim down to prevent excessive foliage falling to the ground – and, as already discussed, into your gutters.
