ShuruKar: Your next business could start in your hometown

A big idea does not need a big city. That was the message from Patna, where The Bharat Project, an initiative by YourStory, launched ShuruKar at Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Science City in Rajinder Nagar.

Developed in partnership with DPIIT and Startup India, ShuruKar is billed as the first nationwide district-level movement of its kind. It aims to help young Indians identify a problem worth solving in their district, build a business around it, and continue growing it.

The launch drew Shri Nitish Mishra, Minister, Urban Development and Housing Department, Government of Bihar, along with founders, students and young entrepreneurs from across the state.

For Shradha Sharma, Founder and CEO of YourStory and Founder of The Bharat Project, ShuruKar marks a shift from documenting entrepreneurs to creating them.

"For 17 years, I have told the stories of entrepreneurs. But somewhere along the way, I realised that telling their stories is not enough. We have to help create the next generation of them," she said. "Talent is everywhere in India. Ambition is everywhere. Access is not. ShuruKar is our attempt to change that."

She had a direct message for anyone who has wanted to build something but stalled at the starting line: "To every young person who has ever thought, 'I want to do something of my own, but I don't know where to begin,' I want to say that you do not need to have all the answers. You just need to start."

Sharma told the gathering that India's next generation of founders will come as much from Patna, Gaya, Darbhanga and Muzaffarpur as from the metros.
