Sam Altman says OpenAI entering ‘new era of discovery’ with AI mathematics results
OpenAI has released mathematical results generated by an internal frontier AI model, including formalised proofs, as it explores how AI can contribute to scientific discovery.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said the company is entering a “new era of discovery” as OpenAI released a broad set of mathematical results produced by an internal frontier AI model. “We are entering a new era of discovery now,” Altman said in a post on X while sharing OpenAI’s latest research publication on AI progress in mathematics. The company said it is publishing the results through a GitHub repository, including formalisations of many of the proofs in Lean, a programming language that allows mathematical proofs to be checked by computer. OpenAI said the repository would be updated with additional formalisations as they become available. OpenAI also said it was publishing additional details about the process behind the results. These include 10 summaries of the model’s reasoning, estimates of compute used in terms of ChatGPT Pro usage, and statistics on the number of problems attempted. According to OpenAI, the average result used computing equivalent to roughly three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking.
