The last Alien movie to hit the big screen was 2024’s Alien: Romulus, written by Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues and directed by Álvarez. The extent to which Ridley Scott, director of the first Alien film and long considered the steward of the franchise, was involved with Romulus is a little murky. He was a producer on Romulus, and Álvarez told the Los Angeles Times in 2024 that “Ridley was always the person I went to in order to show him where things are and to debate with him and to have his blessing and also his criticism and pushback on some things. It was a creative collaboration where we met in the middle.” In that same article, though, Scott downplayed his feedback, saying, “It is hard work with anybody and their mother giving you advice—the last thing you want at a certain point is advice. … Fede is a surge of energy, and I had to step back and let him do it.”
That might explain why, in August 2026, Scott told French outlet AlloCiné that he thought Alien: Romulus “was OK.”
“I think it needs some help,” Scott continued. “So, I’ve gone back in. I’ve already got a footprint for the next Alien. We did Prometheus, and then Alien: Covenant. So, I’m picking up where we left off in Covenant with Michael Fassbender, who now thinks he’s Ozymandias.”
At that point, the whole project was theoretical; Scott said he had ideas, but there was nothing concrete about it actually happening.
