Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged global tech companies, financial institutions and telecom operators to collaborate and form a comprehensive framework to curb cyber fraud and deep fakes.
“At a time when telecom and digital technology have become so important, it is equally important to make the security framework associated with it ironclad. It is our priority to secure mobile phones and networks… trust is very important for ordinary citizens communicating or making payments through the phone,” PM Modi said.
Speaking at the India Mobile Congress 2026, the PM highlighted India’s successful endeavour to protect citizens from cyber attacks and frauds, noting that global cooperation is required to nip the issue in the bud, especially as most such operations are borderless.
He urged the GSM Association (GSMA), which is a global advocacy group for the telecom industry, and global telecom operators, to create a global mechanism that can potentially prevent cyber fraud before it reaches the masses.
He also offered India’s deep expertise in the area to global regulators, noting that authorities in the country have gained vast knowledge on fighting cyber crime.
He further noted that the discussions held during the IMC’s tenth edition this year will create a map for how the next decade of telecom will look like, in India and globally.
The country has grappled with rising cyber fraud over the past few years, with Indians losing ₹3,588.2 Cr in more than 5.83 Lakh digital payment fraud cases between FY22 and FY26.
The government has consequently taken several steps to curb such frauds, including a dedicated portal to report suspected crime.
