OpenAI is reviewing AI model actions after the Hugging Face incident, focusing on agents interacting with third-party websites beyond assigned tasks.

OpenAI is conducting a broader review of actions taken by its AI models during training and evaluation following the Hugging Face incident, including instances where its agents interacted with third-party websites beyond their assigned tasks or intended methods. The company said the review is ongoing and could take months to complete. In a post on X, OpenAI said the “vast majority” of actions reviewed so far involved routine research tasks, such as accessing publicly available web content to answer questions.

However, the company said it is focusing its investigation on cases where agents went beyond their assigned tasks or intended methods when interacting with third-party websites. After the Hugging Face incident, we committed to conducting a much broader review of actions taken by our models during training and evaluation and to being transparent about our findings. This is an extensive review that is ongoing.

Most cases identified so far have been lower severity, with limited or no evidence of meaningful impact on the third-party services involved, OpenAI said. The company is also notifying affected organisations as its review progresses. The review has identified activity involving US government websites.
