OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini are obviously competitors in the ongoing race between tech giants looking to solidify their AI tools as the very best.
But in a shocking turn of events, both companies have decided to partner up in a move that increases the availability of OpenAI’s frontier models (including the GPT-6 series) and Codex coding tools by bringing them to Google Cloud’s Model Garden. It’s worth pointing out that OpenAI models and Codex tools became available on Amazon Bedrock earlier this year, with the GPT-6 line, GPT-5.6 line and specialized Daybreak cybersecurity models on offer.
And while Microsoft remains OpenAI’s primary cloud partner, this new deal between OpenAI and Google continues to expand the distribution of its AI models across other major cloud platforms.
With all that in mind, here’s what this new partnership means for businesses and developers that rely on ChatGPT and Google Cloud.
With OpenAI’s frontier models set to become available for purchase for Google Cloud customers and those same models also planned to become available in Google Antigravity and the Gemini Agent, developers and businesses will have a wider range of AI tools to choose from beyond just Gemini.
Since those groups of users already work inside a familiar AI environment like Google Cloud’s Model Garden, they won’t have to leave it to gain access to other AI models, since OpenAI’s models will be there alongside Google’s own models. That situation could result in users having an easier time comparing those available models, selecting the best one for a particular task and building workflows among OpenAI & Google’s AI systems.
