‘Obsession’ Director Curry Barker Drops a Freaky Horror Short Just in Time for Halloween

It’s now written into Hollywood lore that Curry Barker was just a guy posting on YouTube before he broke out in the biggest way possible with Obsession. And if you thought one of horror’s next great hopes was turning his back on the platform that gave him his start, Mama Bear is here to jolt you back to reality. Literally. If you need a quick dose of terror as we head into Halloween weekend, here’s five minutes that will easily oblige.

Mama Bear stars Jon Lee Richardson as Floyd, a house cleaner who seemingly dozes off on the job and is then awakened by a phone call as confusing as it is alarming. Is it a prank? That notion wears off quickly when he checks his voice mail and finds the first message is just incoherent screaming. Then his phone goes dead. Then… well, watch and see.

What happened to Floyd, exactly? And what did he (or his lookalike) do to get such a reaction from the pistol-packing Lacey (Katie Sarife)? And exactly who or what is the Mama Bear in Mama Bear? We may never find out, and frankly, it’s probably scarier that way. Most impressive is the way the short drops you right into a bizarre situation, and you’re just immediately locked into the chaos.

Barker’s next feature film, horror comedy Anything but Ghosts, hits theaters May 7, 2027. It stars Barker himself as well as Violet McGraw, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Aaron Paul.
