Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang says US export curbs have accelerated China’s chip ambitions: CNBC

Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said US export restrictions have accelerated China’s efforts to build its own semiconductor industry, potentially compressing a decade of development into five years, CNBC reported.

“We’ve definitely accelerated because of all the regulations. We’ve accelerated their internal capabilities, probably pulled in what would have taken 10 years and made it five,” Huang said in an interview with CNBC at Nvidia’s GTC conference in Berlin.

Huang said the restrictions had spurred China to expand domestic chip manufacturing and invest in the industrial infrastructure needed to support the sector.

“There’s no question we’ve accelerated that,” he said, adding that Nvidia and other US technology companies remained prepared to compete with Chinese rivals.

His comments come as Chinese companies, including Huawei, seek to strengthen their positions across the semiconductor supply chain amid restrictions on access to US technology.

Huang said China’s manufacturing capabilities extended beyond semiconductors to areas including memory, power generation, cooling systems, solar technology and batteries.

Asked whether Nvidia would consider working with Chinese companies such as ChangXin Memory Technologies, which has been reported to be developing high-bandwidth memory chips used in advanced computing systems, Huang said the company was open to partnerships.

Huang said Nvidia remained confident in its ability to compete with semiconductor companies around the world, despite the impact of export restrictions on China’s technology sector.

“Nvidia’s and American technology companies are mighty in this area. We’re ready for competition from all over the place, and we can take on competition from anybody,” he said.
