Meta deploys AI to detect ads linked to child sexual abuse material

Meta said it acted on 5.3 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content in India in the first half of 2026, as it rolled out new AI tools to detect abusive ad schemes.

Meta on Wednesday said it has deployed new artificial intelligence tools to detect ads that covertly direct users to child sexual abuse material, as the company disclosed that it acted on 5.3 million pieces of child sexual exploitation content in India on Facebook and Instagram during the first half of 2026. More than 98% of such content in India was detected and addressed before users reported it, Meta said in a blog post, according to PTI. Globally, Meta acted on 33.2 million pieces of such content on Facebook and Instagram between January and June, with more than 97% detected proactively, the company said.

Meta targets ads that lead users off-platform Meta said it has seen predators increasingly use advertising to distribute illegal material. In such cases, an ad may appear harmless but direct users to child sexual abuse material hosted outside Meta’s platforms. After identifying the scheme, Meta said it expanded its investigation beyond the ads reported to the company, disabled the accounts behind them and blocked the off-platform links involved. The company has now deployed a large language model-based system to detect what it calls “signposting” — ad content that appears benign but is suspected of directing users to illegal material.
