‘Magic: The Gathering’ Is Making a More Magical Marvel Set

Wizards of the Coast has no plans to stop its Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond line anytime soon. For 2027, the popular card game is going back to Marvel, but with some shakeups to the formula.

For starters, the Darkhold Destiny set revealed at New York Comic Con will tell an original story within the Marvel universe “in a distinctly Magic way.” Created by the WOTC narrative team, players will travel through different Marvel dimensions to fight Hela and Dormammu, who’ve teamed up to use the Darkhold across the multiverse. Naturally, this is where magic heroes like Doctor Strange, Scarlet Witch, Brother Voodoo, and others come in, including a brand-new character created specifically for this set.

Neither Marvel nor Wizards are sharing much about this new face just yet. But said character will live beyond the cards thanks to a comic adaptation of the Darkhold story that’ll be written by comics duo Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. And should audiences respond well to them, expect that character to pop up in other stories and places down the line.

In terms of actually playing the game, head designer Mark Rosewater told Polygon that Darkhold will support all of the two-color combinations found within Magic: The Gathering. To Aaron Forsyth, the senior design/creative VP, that allows for “maybe the most complex Universes Beyond set we’ve made. This is in [Magic players’] wheelhouse, so we wanted to pull out all the stops. […] It’s not just wall-to-wall legendary creatures fighting each other.”
