Jio changed India’s telecom market with cheap data and massive scale. A decade on, the bigger bet is technology — from its own 5G stack and thousands of patents to AI, cloud and 6G, with ambitions to take some of it beyond India.

Jio has spent the past 10 years building one of the world’s largest digital networks. Its next challenge is to turn the technology developed to run that network into a business in its own right. Since entering India’s telecom market in 2016, the company has moved far beyond simply connecting customers. It has built its own 5G technology stack, developed proprietary broadband solutions, accumulated thousands of patents and expanded into areas such as cloud, artificial intelligence and enterprise connectivity. At Jio Platforms’ 10-year milestone, Managing Director Akash Ambani described the business as “much more than a telecom company”, highlighting its presence across connectivity, digital products, enterprise solutions and AI.

The strategy now appears to be moving from deploying technology at scale in India to potentially taking some of those capabilities to global markets. A network that became a technology test bed The sheer size of Jio’s network has given the company an unusually large environment in which to build and deploy its own technology. Jio has developed its own 5G core and OSS/BSS systems, covering functions such as network management, customer provisioning and billing. It has also built an end-to-end 5G stack spanning the core, radio and operations software, based on a standalone 5G architecture.
