India should explore 5G network slicing to offer more tailored services, says GSMA chief

GSMA chief Vivek Badrinath says network slicing could help Indian telecom operators offer differentiated services to businesses and consumers without affecting basic connectivity.

The telecom industry wants India to explore greater use of network slicing as 5G networks evolve, with GSMA Director General Vivek Badrinath arguing that the technology could allow operators to offer services tailored to different customer requirements. Speaking to CNBC-TV18 on the sidelines of India Mobile Congress, Badrinath said 5G was designed to take telecom networks beyond a basic, best-effort internet connection. He believes India now needs to have a discussion on how network slicing can be used. What is network slicing? Network slicing allows telecom networks to provide different types of services for customers with different requirements.

Badrinath said the technology was developed to help networks offer a broader set of services rather than simply providing the same type of connectivity to everyone. “We need to lean into these technologies. They were built for a reason,” he said. One potential application is on the business-to-business side. Badrinath cited security services at an event, where cameras and other systems may need to transmit information about what is happening at the venue. Emergency services could also have a dedicated slice of the network, allowing them to use connectivity for a specific purpose.
