Indian companies are exploring smart wearables for uses ranging from voice-based artificial intelligence (AI) assistance and digital payments to education and accessibility, as the market expands beyond fitness tracking and smartphone notifications.

Reliance Jio is preparing to launch AI-powered wearable devices in India, while India’s assistive technology startup Torchit is developing smart glasses for visually impaired users. US-based chip maker Qualcomm, which has worked with Jio and Lenskart on wearable devices, sees glasses emerging as an early growth segment, with local applications in payments, education and productivity.

The developments, showcased at India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026, reflect how Indian companies are approaching the category through services and features suited to local requirements, including Indian language support and access to digital services without having to use a smartphone screen.

Reliance Intelligence's AI wearables division is developing devices that will allow users to access its AI services through different form factors, including glasses and audio devices. The company said it expected to launch its wearables in India around November or December 2026.
