I wore the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro for a marathon, and this watch won by miles

This weekend I ran my 7th marathon in Frankfurt, Germany, and, while worrying about the pouring rain and strong gusts of wind, I made things even more interesting by putting the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and Garmin Fenix 9 Pro head-to-head.

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is Apple’s newest rugged sports watch, with a new heart rate monitor and a readiness score, helping you work out when to push yourself and when to recover. The Fenix 9 Pro, on the other hand, is Garmin’s most advanced sports watch yet. Both came out this year, and both offer all the sports modes and stats you need to track workouts, plus comprehensive daily activity and sleep tracking.

We’ve put all the features head-to-head in our Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Garmin Fenix 9 Pro face-off here, but read on to see which came out on top on race day.

Fenix 9 Pro 43mm: $1249
There are a lot of models to pick from the Garmin Fenix 9 line-up, but the 43mm Fenix 9 Pro with inReach is the one I've tested and offers unbelievable battery life, along with an all-titanium case and LTE and satellite connectivity.View Deal

Like most European marathons, the Frankfurt Marathon had a marker every kilometer, so for this test, I switched both watches from miles to kilometers. I manually lapped each watch every 5km, so I could be sure I was on pace, and when I finished running, I downloaded the data to see which watch was more accurate.
