I bypassed the most powerful water filter for one that fits more cleanly into my routine.

Last year, I began testing water filters. The market has flooded with options, from big names like Brita and Culligan to flashy upstarts and powerful reverse osmosis machines, each with its own unique strengths and weaknesses. As I moved through the test cohort, I learned that filtering power matters, but it isn’t the whole story. As one expert I spoke with made clear, a water filter has to fit your life in addition to doing its primary job well.

The $375 AquaTru Carafe reverse osmosis system, which is certified to remove more than 80 contaminants, earned the top spot on our list. As impressive as AquaTru’s powerhouse filter is, it isn’t the one I chose for my own counter. For one, it’s made mostly of plastic, like most RO filters. These intense water filtration systems also remove nearly everything from the water by design, which can leave it tasting flat.

I ultimately chose Rorra’s stylish gravity filter for my home. While it can’t do everything a powerful RO system does, it offers the right level of filtering for me, wrapped in a handsome frame that’s easy to handle day-to-day.
