India's largest two-wheeler maker Hero MotoCorp plans to increase the production capacity of its Vida electric two-wheeler to 45,000 units by March-end and further boost it to 80,000 units by the second quarter of FY28, according to a senior company official.
Hero MotoCorp CEO Harshavardhan Chitale said supply is a constraint, with dealer inventory of just around one day.
"Our dealer inventory continues to be low. We are working with a dealer stock of just about one day, which shows that we are still capacity constrained and there is a strong demand for our product," he said.
The automaker's electric two-wheeler capacity was at 15,000 units per month at the end of the financial year 2026. The capacity currently stands at 30,000 units.
"We have already doubled the capacity. We are well on our way to take it to 45,000 units a month in the fourth quarter. Looking at the demand, we are expanding further, which will take our capacity to over 80,000 units a month by the second quarter of FY28," he said.
The electric two-wheeler market is witnessing strong demand with penetration exceeding 20% in the scooter segment. As per the data from FADA, registration of electric two-wheelers jumped 33% in the Navratri period to 75,758 units, while the total two-wheeler registration fell almost 3% to 8.34 lakh units.
TVS Motor is the market leader, followed by Bajaj Auto, Ather Energy and Hero MotoCorp. All the top four OEMs are ramping up their capacity to meet the surge in demand.
