Google’s New Playground Aims to Make It Easy to Vibe Code a Game Right in Your Browser

AI coding agents have made it easier than ever to vibe code software. Now Google wants to make it just as easy for anyone to create games with AI prompts, no previous coding experience required.

The company announced Playground on Wednesday, a new browser-based platform that lets users create custom games with AI and share them online, where they can be played on both desktop and mobile devices.

Using Playground’s chat interface, users can create a game from scratch, get inspiration from starter prompts, or use guided support to help shape their ideas. The AI then builds the game, which users can immediately test and continue refining.

“Want to tweak the physics, rewrite the rules, customize the characters, or overhaul the environment? Just ask,” Google wrote in a blog post.

Finished games can then be kept private, shared with friends, or published to the Playground Explore gallery for anyone to play.

A Google spokesperson told The Verge that Playground is powered by “Google’s existing foundation models (Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria) paired with a custom harness refined through our own internally built games and evaluations.”

In a promotional video for the new platform, Google showed a user generating several games, including one from the prompt, “A cozy ube latte game. The environment is a busy cafe. Retro pixel style art. You use your arrow keys to move the little latte cup side to side to catch falling sugar cubes.”

The video also showed the user uploading a photo of her cat as a reference while creating a yarn ball derby game.
