Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh said the proposed Google AI data centre in Visakhapatnam does not require Union government clearance, asserting that approvals for data centres fall within the state’s jurisdiction. He also addressed concerns over water use and renewable energy.

Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh has clarified that the proposed Google AI data centre in Visakhapatnam does not require clearance from the Union government, saying approvals for data centres fall within the jurisdiction of state governments. Addressing questions over regulatory oversight of the hyperscale project, Lokesh said data centre clearances were a state subject, and that Andhra Pradesh had the authority to approve and expedite the facility without seeking intervention from the Centre. The clarification comes amid continuing discussion over the pace and scale of approvals for the project.

Minister Nara Lokesh also sought to address concerns over the data centre’s water requirements, saying the state government was working to minimise any potential impact. He has previously said dedicated pipelines and additional water supplies, separate from the city’s drinking water network, would serve the facility. He has also argued that comparisons with water-intensive industries such as thermal power plants can be exaggerated or misleading. Lokesh reiterated that the Google data centre would run substantially on renewable energy, in line with the state’s mandate requiring data centres to source at least 70% of their power from clean sources such as solar, wind and pumped-storage generation.
