In a world set on the expansion of digital photography, Fujifilm is one of the rare companies still pushing the envelope with new products set on analog design. The company’s new Instax Square 2, available later this month, is a square-format instant camera that comes with a few filters to customize the look and feel of your photos.
The (relatively large) camera is very similar in functionality to previous square-format Instax cameras like the Square SQ1. It also looks very similar, although Fujifilm says the Square 2 has a “clean, new sculpted body.” The big selling point here is those filters. The Square 2 has a little switch on its body that swaps out two filters in front of the lens: warm, which creates a “subtle golden tone,” and Cool, which is “crisp” and “blue-toned.”
The Square 2 includes all the modern instant photography conveniences consumers have come to expect from Instax, like a built-in selfie mirror, automatic exposure, and an automatic flash. The camera includes three shooting modes, which you can switch using a ring around the lens: close-up mode, landscape mode, and standard mode. The Square 2 is available in three colors: slate blue, misty white, and brick red. All three colors are quite soft and nice to look at.
As you might expect, the Square 2 prints on Instax’s square instant film. The company is also adding a new version of this square film to its lineup along with the Square 2’s launch—a “Soft Haze” film.
