Electric passenger vehicle retail sales nearly doubled in September to 36,108 units from 18,559 units in the corresponding month last year even as the overall EV sales surged a whopping 74% year-on-year to 3,33,364 units in the previous month, Federation of Automobile Dealers' Association (FADA) said in Wednesday.
Festive demand, maturing running-cost economics, a widening choice of models and sustained policy support through PM E-DRIVE and progressive state schemes are together turning the EV from an alternative into a default consideration for a growing set of buyers, FADA said.
The EV industry had reported a total sales of 191 497 units in September 2025.
"September delivered the highest-ever monthly EV retail India has recorded 3,33,634 units across categories, up 74% year-on-year, lifting overall EV penetration to about 13% from 10% a year ago," said FADA President Sai Giridhar.
Unlike the broader market, where September's headline is flattered by a weak year-ago base, the EV number is a clean, absolute record, he said, adding that electric vehicles did not merely grow against last year -- they set a new all-time high.
The record was led by the mass market with electric two-wheelers touched a fresh all-time high of 2,07,314 units, up 88% year-on-year, taking their share to 11.6%, he said.
More than one in nine two-wheelers retailed is now electric, as per FADA.
5%. 9%, and while electric commercial vehicles eased month-on-month, they still grew over 150% year-on-year as fleet electrification deepens," Giridhar added.
