The TrimNinja is a solid budget beard-trimming option, though OneBlade delivers a closer shave.
Hybrid trimmers are among the most interesting recent developments in personal grooming. I say recent, but it’s already been a decade since Philips Norelco debuted the OneBlade. The trimmer’s unique combination of an electric beard trimmer and a traditional razor still stands out for its ability to mow down longer hairs while leaving behind a relatively close shave.
When it hit the men’s grooming market in 2016, I wondered when other brands would catch on. A decade later, a handful of notable brands like Braun, Barbasol and Wahl are throwing their hats in the ring. The Wahl TrimNinja All-In-One is the newest and the first I’ve seen offering interchangeable beard-trimmer attachments beyond rivals’ flat shaver heads.
Since I already have comparable models from Philips and Braun, I decided to try a sample Wahl TrimNinja to see whether it’s a worthwhile alternative. So far, I’m happy with the experience, though competitors still have the upper hand in some areas.
Before I get too deep into the differences, I should mention Wahl’s double-sided groomer head — the feature most similar to the competition’s. The top and bottom edges feature a trimmer for cutting longer hairs and tidying beard lines, while the flat surface foil goes in for a close shave. The appeal of a hybrid design like this is that you don’t need to juggle separate beard trimmers and razors—something I find incredibly useful for on-the-go touchups and travel.
