Mike Flanagan and the Carrie cast help unpack the violent events of the tragic season finale.
Every episode of Carrie dropped on Prime Video on Wednesday, and we got to see the titular character get her time in the prom spotlight. Since the opening moments of creator Mike Flanagan’s reinterpretation of Stephen King‘s classic novel, the program has hinted at a major traumatic event that took place at the dance, destroyed the school and decimated much of the town.
If you’re familiar with the story of Carrie White (which has been told more than once, at this point), you were probably like me, waiting for the bucket to be dropped on the girl with psychic powers to see all hell break loose in the season finale. And it did, with an array of details that strays from previous adaptations of King’s story, which I’ll get into below.
Prime Video’s Carrie brings a fair share of grounded realism to the mix, shining a light on a broken educational system and the social media-fueled dysfunction that teenagers must navigate daily through the chaotic halls of high school.
Moreover, though, Flanagan’s Carrie works tirelessly to build the world that exists around Carrie, both in Ewen High School and throughout the broader community, which leads to a delightful connection to some of King’s other classic works.
I spoke with Flanagan and the cast of Carrie over Zoom to dig into the finale’s events and ponder where the series might go if it gets picked up for more seasons.
