In many Indian homes, the most useful spot for a device isn't necessarily the one it was designed for. It could be the table in the living room, the console near the entrance or a bedside surface where a phone charger, a lamp and a few everyday essentials already compete for space.
The company has unveiled Apple HomeView, a smart-home device with a 7-inch display that brings together music, video calls, personal information and controls for connected home devices. It can sit on a tabletop or be mounted on a wall and is designed to serve multiple people in the same household.
The proposition is straightforward: give the home a screen that stays put, rather than relying on a phone every time someone wants to check a reminder, make a call, play music or see what's happening outside the front door.
But HomeView enters a category where convenience alone may not be enough to justify another device. At ₹39,900, it also raises a familiar consumer question: how much are people willing to pay to make everyday technology feel more seamless?
Unlike a conventional smart display, HomeView is designed to offer a different experience to different members of the household. It can recognise up to six people and provide each with a personalised Home Screen, including apps and widgets.
That could make it useful in homes where family members share common spaces but have different schedules, reminders and routines. Apple says personal content, including information from Messages and Calendar, is protected by user-recognition and device-security requirements, while shared photos and music remain available to everyone.
