Available in two versions, the new 6-inch Kindle has an appealing lightweight and compact design that arguably makes it the best choice for e-reading on the go.
Whenever Amazon comes out with new Kindle e-readers every couple of years, people always ask me, “What’s the best Kindle to get?” My default answer used to be the Paperwhite. The basic Kindle once looked and felt a little cheap; it didn’t have a front light, and its screen resolution was a step down from the Paperwhite’s. But the latest entry-level Kindle doesn’t seem so entry-level anymore, with the gap between it and the Paperwhite narrowing to the point where my favorability rating is tipping toward the base Kindle, particularly when you factor in pricing and how lightweight it is.
In case you hadn’t noticed already, Kindle e-readers are now surprisingly expensive thanks to component shortages that have affected the cost of a wide range of consumer electronics. When Amazon released the previous version of the basic Kindle in 2024, its list price was $110. That 2024 model got a price bump to $150 earlier this year — and that’s what this new Kindle starts at.
” One of the key changes is that, like the Paperwhite, the Kindle 2026 now features a new flush-front display, which means the screen is completely level with the surrounding bezel, with no raised border. The power button has also been moved from the bottom to the right side near the top (an improvement).
