Amazon, Flipkart see strong start to 2026 festive sales

India’s two largest ecommerce platforms, Amazon India and Flipkart, have launched their flagship annual festive sales—the Amazon Great Indian Festival (GIF) 2026 and Flipkart’s The Big Billion Days (TBBD) 2026. Both platforms reported strong consumer participation, sharp increase in demand across categories, and growing adoption of quick-commerce delivery options in non-metro markets.

Amazon said it recorded over 440 million visits during the opening phase of its sale, the highest volume in its history. The platform saw a 100% year-on-year increase in products ordered, while daily app downloads surged fivefold. More than 72% of visits came from outside the top nine metros. First-time shoppers nearly doubled year-on-year, and orders were placed from every pin code in the country.

Flipkart, meanwhile, recorded 6.3 million concurrent users per minute during its opening peak hour, attracting over six times as many active users as during a regular hour. The platform said it also recorded 287 million sessions during the early access window for Plus, Black, and co-branded card members.

Non-metro markets accounted for approximately 60% of overall traction, with Tier III towns and beyond contributing nearly half of all visits during the opening hour, it said. New customer numbers grew 34% during the same period.

Amazon said electronics and premium upgrades performed exceptionally well. Premium Android smartphone sales rose 70% year-on-year, while MacBook Neo sales grew 65X over a regular business day. Large appliances surged 50X, led by washing machines (80X), refrigerators (60X), and home entertainment (77X).

In fashion, footwear sales reached seven pairs per second, while Nike sales rose 16-fold compared with regular days.
