AI guardrails vs innovation: What India and the Global South need as frontier AI races ahead
India's AI policy challenge extends beyond regulation, with questions around child safety, data ownership, digital public infrastructure and access to frontier technology. Athena Infonomics' Deepa Karthykeyan and APLYD's Nakul Jain discuss how emerging economies can build safeguards while retaining flexibility over AI models, hardware and cloud platforms, and continue developing their capabilities without falling behind technologically.
As artificial intelligence emerges as an important part of discussions between the US and China, the question of how to put guardrails around the technology without slowing innovation is gaining attention. For countries such as India and others in the Global South, the debate is also about having a say in how frontier AI develops while building their own capabilities. US President Donald Trump has said AI would be a key point of discussion during Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to the US, while ruling out new AI regulations. Xi, meanwhile, has said Beijing can keep artificial intelligence under human control. Against this backdrop, Deepa Karthykeyan, Co-Founder of Athena Infonomics, and Nakul Jain, Co-Founder and CEO of APLYD and Partner at Athena Infonomics, spoke to CNBC-TV18 about AI guardrails, child safety and why emerging economies need to remain part of the conversation.
Why AI guardrails are becoming important As AI becomes part of technology platforms and services used at population scale, the question of how those systems protect users is becoming more important.
