AI adoption fails on mandates

Leaders around the country are mandating AI amidst efficiency promises and required training. Programs roll out and employees nod, complete the requirements, and quietly go back to the way they’ve always worked.

Here’s the problem with mandates: they don’t work on fear and, for most people, AI is frightening. It’s moving fast, it’s everywhere, and it feels like it’s coming for the thing your employees are best at. You can’t mandate your way past that. You can’t efficiency your way past it either.

Here’s what separates organizations getting AI adoption right: they understand that AI spreads the same way brands do.

Strong adoption doesn’t come from mandates; it comes from desire. From someone you respect make something look possible, valuable, and worth wanting. Not for the organization, but for you.

That’s how the iPhone’s popularity spread, and that’s how real change sticks.

Your organization is made up of mini-communities that act like a social network. Use them. They are experimenting, learning, talking, sharing, and spreading.

Support these communities by encouraging and protecting time for them to experiment. Provide them with needed resources, early access to AI strategic plans and tools, and a seat in the feedback loop before and after new initiatives roll out.

Take AI adoption messaging out of the C-suite and instead create a platform for peer stories about AI use to be shared and scaled to the organization. Internal showcases, demo sessions, storytelling forums are all far more compelling than PowerPoints and presentations from executives.
