Experts say smart dog doorbells can simplify potty training, but finding the right one requires looking beyond price and range. Here’s what to consider before you buy.
Smart dog doorbells are a potty training gadget to help your puppy tell you when it’s time to go outside. The system usually includes a touch button for your puppy and a receiver that chimes or lights up when pressed. With a quick search online, you’ll find dozens of options. Each varies in size, sound, range and features.
“I’ve used the push-button one that has a speaker somewhere else in the house so you can always hear when the dog needs to go potty — no matter where you are in the home,” said Kimberlee Tolentino, owner and trainer at Black Magic Dog Training. Tolentino said she’s seen clients have great success with push-button doorbells.
But picking the right one for your household takes more than a quick scroll online. Here are seven things to consider before buying a smart dog doorbell for potty training, based on what I learned from Tolentino and my family’s experience using one.
Where you plan to put the button affects which model makes sense for you. Some smart dog doorbells come with Velcro or adhesive strips so you can attach the button to a door or wall. Others are designed to sit on the floor where your puppy can press it with their paw. Consider where you plan to mount the button, and pick the model that fits the location.
