7 Things emotionally intelligent people do differently

Emotional intelligence is not about staying calm all the time or knowing exactly what to say in every situation. It is about understanding your emotions, recognising how others feel, and choosing how to respond rather than reacting impulsively.

In everyday life, emotional intelligence can influence how we handle disagreements, build relationships, respond to criticism, and navigate difficult situations. People who develop this skill are often better equipped to communicate clearly, understand different perspectives, and manage their emotions constructively.

The good news is that emotional intelligence is not simply something you are born with. Many of its essential skills can be practised and strengthened over time.

When someone criticises them, disagrees with them, or says something hurtful, emotionally intelligent people try not to respond immediately out of anger.

They understand that an emotional reaction can sometimes make a difficult situation worse. Instead of sending an impulsive message or saying something they might regret, they give themselves time to process what happened.

For example, if a colleague points out a mistake, they may initially feel embarrassed or defensive. Rather than immediately arguing, they consider whether the feedback is useful and how they can respond constructively.

Pausing does not mean ignoring your emotions or pretending that nothing bothers you. It means allowing yourself to feel an emotion without letting it make every decision for you.

The lesson: You cannot always control what you feel, but you can practise choosing how you respond.

Emotionally intelligent people recognise that their perspective is not the only possible explanation for a situation.
